Protocol Documentation
Quick Start
Notera is an on-chain market protocol connecting capital seeking predefined yield with capital seeking protection against severe downside. This testnet deployment runs on Robinhood Chain with mock USDG and stock tokens.
Notera Markets
A Notera Market is a single structured position around a supported underlying asset, defined entirely by predetermined parameters recorded at creation. Each market receives a unique identifier (e.g. Market #1042) with two position classes: YIELD-1042 and PROTECT-1042.
| Underlying | Tokenized stock (NVDA, AAPL, TSLA, …) |
| Reference price | P₀, fixed at activation via the oracle |
| Protection threshold | B = P₀ × barrier ratio |
| Termination level | A = P₀ × activation ratio |
| Payment rate | Fixed % of notional per observation |
| Observation schedule | Predetermined observation dates |
| Maximum duration | Maturity cap for the market |
| Settlement | Physical delivery of the underlying |
The Two Sides
YIELD
Deposits the settlement currency (stablecoin liquidity). Receives predefined periodic payments and accepts the possibility of receiving the underlying asset if the downside settlement condition occurs.
Provides: stablecoin liquidity · settlement capital
PROTECT
Deposits the underlying asset plus the required payment reserve. Receives contractual protection when the underlying experiences a sufficiently severe decline, and the asset back when it does not.
Provides: underlying asset · payment reserve
The sides are intentionally complementary: YIELD accepts risk in exchange for payments, PROTECT pays for reduced downside exposure. Market economics emerge from this relationship rather than from a promised return.
Market Lifecycle
Every market follows the same nine-stage lifecycle, governed entirely by the protocol:
Parameters are locked at activation. A completed market cannot be modified after final settlement.
Observations & Payments
Notera does not evaluate every price movement. Each market has predefined observation events at which the official reference price P is checked against the market conditions. Depending on the observation, the market may:
- trigger a scheduled payment;
- remain active;
- terminate early; or
- proceed toward final settlement.
When the payment condition is satisfied, the YIELD position becomes entitled to its scheduled payment. With a $10,000 notional and a 1.50% rate per observation, the payment is $150. If the condition is not satisfied, no payment is generated — the protocol does not guarantee a fixed return independent of market conditions.
Barriers & Termination
Each market carries a protection threshold B and an automatic termination level A, both derived from the initial reference price:
Example: with P₀ = $100 and a 65% barrier ratio, B = $65. A qualifying observation below B activates the severe-downside condition; a price above it does not. If an eligible observation satisfies P ≥ A, the market terminates early: obligations close, eligible payments are calculated, and collateral is returned per the settlement rules.
Settlement
Two primary outcomes exist at final settlement:
| Normal (P ≥ B) | Underlying collateral returns to PROTECT; YIELD receives its final settlement. |
| Protection (P < B) | Physical settlement: the underlying is delivered to the YIELD side; PROTECT receives the contractual protection value. |
Notera settles directly in the underlying token — no synthetic representations. This produces a direct relationship between the asset deposited by PROTECT participants and the asset delivered under the YIELD settlement condition.
Collateral Architecture
Collateral is held by protocol-controlled escrow contracts, logically separated into three pools: user collateral committed to active markets, payment reserves reserved for scheduled payments, and the protocol treasury. Treasury assets must never be treated as collateral for user positions.
Upon settlement: initial collateral = distributed settlement + returned collateral + valid protocol fees. Markets are fully pre-funded and non-leveraged — once active, participants do not face margin calls as the underlying price moves.
Contract Architecture
| Notera Core | Market engine: creation, activation, subscription, matching, lifecycle, observations, settlement. |
| Notera Vault | Custody layer: stablecoin and underlying-token custody, payment reserves, accounting, withdrawals. |
| Notera Positions | Position tokens (YIELD-#### / PROTECT-####), balances, transferability, settlement status. |
| Notera Oracle | Reference prices: source approval, timestamp validation, freshness, decimal normalization. |
| Notera Settlement | Finalization: condition evaluation, payment calculation, distribution, market closure. |
Position tokens can be transferred between wallets, but transferability does not guarantee a secondary market — a position may remain illiquid even when technically transferable.
Oracle Security
Price data is the most critical input. The oracle layer enforces approved data sources, freshness requirements, timestamp validation, observation windows, decimal normalization, circuit breakers, and invalid-price rejection. An arbitrary price submission is never treated as a valid market observation — observations must satisfy the requirements defined by the corresponding market. Reference pricing on Robinhood Chain is provided by Chainlink.
Fees
Protocol fees may apply to market creation, settlement, position issuance, and protocol liquidity. Fees are displayed before capital is committed. Example: gross payment $150, protocol fee $3, net payment $147. The exact structure is determined by the deployed contracts.
$NTER Token
$NTER is the native token of the Notera ecosystem and is separate from the collateral used to settle markets. Holding $NTER does not represent ownership of user collateral, underlying assets, guaranteed yield, or a claim against protocol reserves.
Potential utility, per the deployed contracts:
| Governance | Participation in protocol governance. |
| Staking | Optional staking mechanisms (see the Stake page). |
| Liquidity incentives | Distribution to eligible liquidity providers. |
| Ecosystem incentives | Rewards for community and protocol participation. |
| Protocol utility | Access or utility asset for certain ecosystem functions. |
Governance
Governance controls parameters intended to remain adjustable: supported assets, protocol fees, market limits, oracle configuration, liquidity-facility limits, token incentives, and risk parameters. Governance does not possess unrestricted authority to confiscate user collateral; critical administrative actions use access controls and, where practical, delayed execution. Active proposals are listed on the Governance page.
Security
The protocol is developed with security as a core design constraint: unit, integration, fuzz, and invariant testing; economic simulations; oracle failure and access-control testing; static analysis; deployment verification; and independent security review. Core invariants — asset conservation, position conservation, settlement conservation, reserve isolation, and finality — must hold for every market.
Risk Factors
Participation in Notera markets involves significant risk, including:
| Underlying asset risk | The underlying may lose substantial value. |
| Settlement risk | Value received at settlement may differ materially from initial capital. |
| Barrier risk | A loss that does not cross the threshold may not activate protection. |
| Early termination risk | A market can terminate earlier than expected. |
| Oracle risk | Incorrect or unavailable data can affect settlement. |
| Smart contract risk | Vulnerabilities may result in partial or total loss of deposits. |
| Liquidity risk | A position may be difficult or impossible to sell before maturity. |
| Stablecoin risk | Settlement currencies carry depeg, issuer, and infrastructure risk. |
| Token risk | $NTER may be highly volatile and lose substantial or all value. |
| Regulatory risk | Legal treatment varies by jurisdiction; participants are responsible for compliance. |
Notera does not guarantee profits, token appreciation, fixed returns, minimum APY, or protection from every decline. Nothing here is investment advice. For the full document, read the whitepaper.
